چکیده

The single-crystal elastic properties of phase A have been investigated by Brillouin spectroscopy at ambient conditions. The Voigt-Reuss-Hill average for the adiabatic bulk and shear moduli are KS = 106(1) GPa and μ = 61(1) GPa, respectively. The present acoustic measurements resolve discrepancies between the bulk moduli obtained in earlier compression studies. The axial compressibility of the hexagonal (P63) structure is highly anisotropic with the c-axis, which is perpendicular to the distorted close-packed layers, approximately 21% stiffer than the a-axis, in agreement with previous compression studies. The hydration of forsterite to phase A decreases the bulk and shear moduli by about 18 and 21%, respectively, while both compressional VP and shear VS wave velocities decrease by about 7%. These results suggest that water could be identiÞ ed seismologically if phase A is present in abundance in cold subducted slabs.

Crystal structure and compression of an iron-bearing Phase A to 33 GPa

Fe-bearing dense hydrous magnesium silicate Phase A, Mg6.85Fe0.14Si2.00O8(OH)6 has been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at ambient conditions and by high-pressure powder diffraction using synchrotron radiation to 33 GPa. Unit cell parameters at room temperature and pressure from single crystal diffraction are a=7.8678 (4) Å, c=9.5771 (5) Å, and V=513.43 (4) Å. Fitting of the P–V dat...

Crystal structure, equation of state, and elasticity of phase H (MgSiO4H2) at Earth’s lower mantle pressures

Dense hydrous magnesium silicate (DHMS) phases play a crucial role in transporting water in to the Earth's interior. A newly discovered DHMS, phase H (MgSiO4H2), is stable at Earth's lower mantle, i.e., at pressures greater than 30 GPa. Here we report the crystal structure and elasticity of phase H and its evolution upon compression. Using first principles simulations, we have explored the rela...

Wadsleyite II: A new high pressure hydrous phase in the peridotite-H2O system

A new hydrous silicate phase with formula Mg1.71Fe0.177Al0.01Si0.965H0.332O4 has been synthesized at 1400°C and 17.5GPa from a hydrous iron-rich mantle peridotite composition. The space group is Imma and unit cell parameters a = 5.6884(4); b = 28.9238(15); and c = 8.2382(6)Å, so that a and c are approximately those of wadsleyite, whereas b is 2.5 times that of wadsleyite. The calculated density...

In situ X-ray di¡raction studies of dense hydrous magnesium silicates at mantle conditions

Lizardite was pressurized up to about 28 and 20 GPa and heated at 1310 ( þ 50) and 1100 ( þ 100)3C; antigorite was pressurized at about 25 and 22 GPa and heated at V10003C, with a Nd:YAG laser using the double-side laser heating technique. Samples were then examined in situ by energy dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Our results show that phase E, superhydrous phase B, and phase D are i...

Compressibility of water in magma and the prediction of density crossovers in mantle differentiation.

Hydrous silicate melts appear to have greater compressibility relative to anhydrous melts of the same composition at low pressures (<2GPa); however, at higher pressures, this difference is greatly reduced and becomes very small at pressures above 5GPa. This implies that the pressure effect on the partial molar volume of water in silicate melt ( partial differentialV-H2O/ partial differentialP) ...
